Event Recap: Dance for Joy
May 8, 2009 by Lakita
I am still in awe of the GREAT things that took place at the Dance for JOY workshop! JOYED UP! Youth praise dance ministry really took ownership of their event from beginning to end. They picked the movement disciplines, the menu (pizza of course), and ministered through teaching and dance.
The day started with their class "Dance for JOY" in which they spoke about why they choose to minister in dance, Bible verses supporting dance, and perhaps their favorite topic – Ministry vs. Entertainment, where they compared and contrasted ministry with entertainers their peers are familiar with (America’s Best Dance Crew, Hannah Montana, and Cheetah Girls to name a few).
At an age where peer approval is priority, I commend them for standing in front of a group of their peers and teaching a foundational truth of ministry. The revelations God downloaded into these teens, pre-teens (and pre-pre-teens!) was direct from His mouth to theirs. Nuggets such as:
"When we minister we are not concern with making people happy – we want to make God happy"
"Ministry is letting God take control and move through you and with entertainment you stay in control"
"With entertainment you get the glory and with ministry God gets the glory"
**************
The breakout sessions were full of energy as the youth learned a variety of movement disciplines such as Step, Mime, African, and Praise. There were classes for the Parents / Leaders as well such as: Pulling the Gifts out of your youth, Starting & Maintaining a Dance Ministry and the "Un-Blushable" Generation.

The energy poured into the afternoon service as we all came together to lift up the name of Jesus. JOYED UP ministered an Israel Medley with the help of some of the workshop dancers!
Sidebar: Let’s not underestimate our youth! These kids learned choreography for a 12 minute song in less than an hour!!!
We witnessed the Spirit of the Lord fall upon one of our youngest members as she Danced before the Lord and led us to a higher place of worship! And a child shall lead them!
Each ministry (all youth) came to give God glory! Our speaker, Tearra Vaughn blessed us with praise dance too ~ GLORY! She spoke directly to the youth to meet them where they are. She was engaging an kept their attention…not always an easy task!
At the end of the day the altar was filled with youth that desired to walk closer with Jesus – to God be ALL the GLORY!
On behalf of JOYED UP! I would like to thank every participant & attendee for your loving support.
To JOYED UP (and their parents!) ~ I am honored to serve as your dance ministry president. I love you all very much!

Kingdom Greetings!
…and He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers for the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry
(Eph 4:11-12, NKJV)
Each year the Lord has divinely appointed awesome men and women of God operating in the 5-fold ministry to educate, empower, and equip us in all areas of ministry.
This year is no different. In addition to some familiar classes and faces, there are many new aspects of EQS2009 that are featured below. For full conference information, visit the Equipping the Saints Conference Website.

Pastor Tanya Brown – She collaboratively pastors Bethesda Temple Church of Alton with her husband, Bishop Lawrence Brown Jr. She is a "soul winner" that is being used mightily all over the world in crusades, revivals and conferences. Pastor Brown will be the keynote speaker on the opening night of the conference!
Patricia Kieffer (on right) – is the owner of Making His Praise Glorious which offers worship flags and shields. She has blessed us at EQS with her ministry products, and I’m excited that she will also bless us with instruction.
Suzanne Tushar (on left) – is the director and owner of Son Dance Ministry. She has blessed us with her products the last two years as well. This year she will teach us Davidic Dance & Ministering with timbrels
Karen Osbourne - Minister Karen Osbourne is "a teacher’s teacher"! She has a profound understanding of the times we are living in, what is going on in Israel, and why it is applicable to us today.
Chena Anderson - is the visionary behind the Esther’s Robe’s garments. These garments are unique and prophetic. She is a gifted craftsmen that was able to take the conference vision and transform it into a throne room setting. This year, she will teach on Twirl Flags along with her son.

Starting a Dance Ministry (Part 1 of 3)
April 14, 2009 by Lakita
One of the seminars I teach is called Starting a Dance Ministry: Prepare Now or Repair Later. While this article series is not meant to be a replacement for the seminar, it is my prayer that new dance ministries will be able to use this as a resource as they launch into a new area of ministry.
“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? ? I will show you what he is like who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice. ? He is like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. ? But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” Luke 6:46-49
The power of preparation and building on a strong foundation is often not appreciated until the storm comes. However, it is the preparation and strong foundation that enable us to survive the storm.
How to prepare?
Use AAA (Not the car people!)
Assessment
Take a look at the current situation. Is there a dance ministry or has there been one in the past? If so, what happened to it? How does the leadership feel about dance ministry? Answering these will help determine how to proceed.
Alignment
Ask yourself “Am I lined up correctly?” , “Am I postured to take a leadership role?”, “Do I have the time necessary to submit to this ministry?”
Attitude
What is your attitude about yourself? God? Leadership? Your peers?
Prayer
Pray specifically & strategically about the possibility of starting a dance ministry. Address the 3-As listed above as you seek the Lord for an answer and guidance
“…The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much”
James 5:16b
Vision & Purpose
You have to have PURPOSE and a VISION!
A vision statement isn’t something that is just put in a manual or on a website to sound “catchy” – it keeps you on track, brings about unity, is a catalyst for passion and energy. Your vision is a” ministry motivator!”
Proverbs 4:25-27: Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; then stick to the path and stay safe. Don’t get sidetracked.
Proverbs 29:18 Where this is no vision…the people perish
Your vision will keep you on track! If you are seeking to start a dance ministry within your church, this should align with the vision of your local assembly. For example, if your church has a strong focus on evangelizing and outreach, then that will probably be the focus of your dance ministry. Alternately, your pastor may be seeking the dance ministry to assist in setting the atmosphere for the preached word; write that into your vision. Make sure you internalize and revisit your vision often to stay focused.
Starting a Dance Ministry part 2 addresses practical issues such as advertising the new ministry, sample rehearsal schedules, garments, and fund raising. Additionally, Starting a Dance Ministry part 3 addresses the necessary administration documents
